President Bush held a press conference with the Heads of states from Mexico and Canada today in New Orleans, LA. The three leaders were meeting to discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement,(NAFTA).
There were no bold new agreements announced and President Bush continued placing the spotlight on Speaker of the House Nancy Polosi. On the pending Colombian Trade Agreement, Mr. Bush singled out Pelosi, saying if she doesn’t schedule a vote on the Colombian Free Trade Agreement, she will have killed it.
I hope she will stand firm against the Lame Duck President’s pressure to schedule a vote on the Colombian Free Trade Agreement. The members of the House will need to stand firm with Polosi in her decision to postpone the matter until after we elect a new President.
“She’s going to have to explain why the voices of false populism have been strengthened,” Mr. Bush said, referring to leftist Latin American leaders like Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez.
Layoffs in U.S. manufacturing and the current economic slowdown have made NAFTA and other free-trade deals the subject of intense criticism in the Democratic-led Congress. Both Obama and Clinton want to renegotiate it to add labor and environmental protections.
“I’m concerned about protectionism in America. It is not in our interest to become a projectionist nation,” Mr. Bush said.
President Bush reiterated how the economies of Canada and Mexico have grown, and pointed out the prosperity on the Mexican border. Here Bush is simply Window dressing and putting lipstick on a pig.
Until the poor are fed, housed, with adequate health care and educational opportunities then there has been no benefits of NAFTA.
What are the metrics and methods used to determine how many and how few of those at the bottom verses those at the very top our benefiting? It may be helping the people of Mexico, but to little to stim the flow of Mexican citizens illegally entering the U.S.
Bush said, after meeting with Harper and Calderone separately”This Summit Comes at an Opportune Time to reaffirm the benefits of the trading arrangements between our three nations”
in my opinion,
Free Trade Agreements equal Americans Manufacturing Jobs heading to Mexico where lower hourly wages are sought. At the same time rewarding those corporations that outsourcing American jobs with Corporate Tax cuts from the U.S. Treasury. Give the people of Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania a brake.
Free Trade Agreements equals Americans buying the products now made in Mexico that we use to make here.
Free Trade Agreements equals products we use to make in America can now be dumped into our markets from Mexico and soon Columbia tariff free.
A good Free Trade Agreement Would be one that puts the welfare of American Businesses and workers first. We should not suffer for the North American Union to flourish for the benefit of the elites of Canada, Mexico and the USA. I don’t think looking out for Americans best interest first is asking for to much.
